What Is AXA?
AXA traces its roots back to its foundation as the London Association for Hospital Services in 1938. They released their first recognised health policy in 1943, which was the Hospital Service Plan (HSP).
When the NHS expanded healthcare to all free at the point of use, the company changed its name to Private Patients Plan (PPP). In 1999 PPP joined the AXA group.
We will be covering what AXA offer, along with answering some common questions we get about their cover to help you determine if AXA is the right provider for you.
Why Choose AXA Health Insurance
AXA’s private medical insurance policy provides all of these benefits:
- 24/7 remote GP access

- Fast Track Physio Access
- 24/7 Helpline access to assist with smaller health concerns

How Much Does AXA Health Insurance Cost?
The cost of health insurance depends on multiple factors, including age, postcode and your current health status, i.e. if there is anything existing health problems that could affect cover. Then there is also the level of cover you are after which will depend on how much it costs, for example the more optional extras you have the more expensive the cover will be.
What Does AXA Personal Healthcare Cover?
AXA health cover allows you to choose from four options and create the plan that’s right for you. Below we will highlight the four options of care that you can get from AXA.
Cancer Care
The personal healthcare cancer cover supports and offers a wide range of treatments for any diagnosis that you receive after you join the plan, these include:
- Get private surgery and drug treatment for cancer, making sure that you don’t have to wait for treatment, surgery or any medication.
- Access to the latest approved cancer drugs and treatments, including those that aren’t routinely available with the NHS. This is only available if referred by a specialist and the drugs you are being prescribed within the terms of its licence. However, outpatient drugs are not covered in this plan.
- Phone support from experienced cancer nurses and a dedicated case manager who’ll be a consistent point of contact to support you and your family throughout your treatment.
- Receive chemotherapy at home, if preferred by the patient and if approved by the doctor allowing you to not worry about going in for treatment.
Inpatient & Day Patient Care
Personal healthcare cover gives you access to approved hospitals that are covered by AXA – even if you need to stay in the hospital just for a day. This allows you to relax and not worry about anything other than the procedure you are going in for. Here is what AXA covers when you go for a hospital visit:
- Offers surgery or other inpatient care fast and in the comfort of a private hospital, allowing
you to get the care you need when you need it. - Covers day patient tests and treatment allowing you to get the results and peace of mind
quickly from AXA approved hospitals. - Covers follow-up outpatient test and treatment that is advised by a specialist once you
leave the hospital even if you don’t have outpatient diagnosis and care, for example
physiotherapy. - Offers cash payment if you decide to use the NHS for treatment that is covered in your
plan, allowing you to still utilise the NHS when needed and not limit you to just private
hospitals.
Outpatient Diagnosis & Care
This cover aims to get you in front of a specialist quickly, allowing you to get answers soon to what
is happening and begin your healthcare journey ASAP. Here is what you can get from AXA as far as
outpatient cover and care:
- See a specialist fast, AXA help you get booked in with a specialist ASAP meaning you aren’t
waiting around to begin your healthcare journey, they can even book the appointment for
you, allowing you to fit the appointment in ASAP but also around your day-to-day life. - Get as many tests, scans and x-rays as you need, meaning you don’t have to worry about
extra costs for more tests, giving you peace of mind that the specialists have your best
interest in mind. - AXA also provides a second opinion with the cover, meaning you can rest assure that if you
need further reassurance, it is covered and allows you to do what is best for you. - Online support for muscles, bones and joints, without having a GP referral, allowing you to
get support for those nagging feelings in your body without having to go through the
process, allowing you to feel at your best while still living your life.
Mental Health Care
The mental health care cover gives you access to help for any mental illnesses that develop or
come up after you have joined the plan. One thing to note with mental health cover, unlike the
others, this isn’t a standalone option that you can have without the other care options. AXA offers
mental health care in addition to one of the other plans. AXA’s mental health cover contains:
- Access to talking therapies with a GP referral, allowing you to have a space you can talk
about what is going on with you thanks to a dedicated therapist to help you along your
journey. - Allows you to see a mental health specialist at hospitals along with getting inpatient care if
you need psychiatric treatment, helping you through your treatment and surgery if needed
while you are being treated in hospital. - No yearly limit on fees, allowing you to have peace of mind that treatment and care for
mental health will not get cut off when you might need it the most.

They clearly explained all of the available options and gave guidance on which would suit my needs and which I probably didn’t need. Clear, concise and very helpful. Would recommend.
