What Is Simplyhealth?
Simplyheath has been around since 1872, starting as the Manchester & Salford Hospital Saturday
Fund (MSHSF) and Leeds Hospital Fund (LHF). Then, in 1986, Denplan was founded, creating the
first dental payment plan. Fast forward, Healthsure was founded in 1999 with the merger of MSHSF
and Healthcare Insurance Alliance, creating HealthSure, which ten years later merged with LHF and
Hospital Savings Association to create Simplyhealth.
We will be covering what Simplyhealth offer, along with answering some common questions we
get about their cover to help you determine if Simplyhealth is the right provider for you.

How Much Does Simplyhealth Health Insurance Cost?
The cost of health insurance always depends on multiple factors when you are looking for quotes,
and each provider considers different factors when considering someone’s case. Including age,
postcode and your current health status, i.e. if there is anything existing health problems that could
affect cover. Furthermore, there are also different levels of cover you may be looking for and this
also affects how much it can cost you, for example having more optional extras will raise the cost of
your insurance. While a way to decrease the cost can also come from raising your excess, offering
to pay more for treatments and cover will bring down your premium.
What Does Simplyhealth Personal Healthcare Cover?
Simplyhealth offer three different forms of personal health care cover. Which you can select
depending on what you are after in your cover. Below we will go into detail about what the plans
are and what they offer.
1-2-3- Health Plan
The 1-2-3 Health plan’s name comes from the cover being split across three areas where you will
receive benefits from and is best suited for those that want to claim money back from various
health service.
It is also ideal for those looking for family health insurance, as you can add your partner and up to
four children under 18, with each having their own benefits allowance. We want to highlight that
with this plan it asks you to pay upfront for the service and then claim back through the SimplyPlan
app and can only be used at registered practitioners.
The three areas the plan cover are
Everyday Essentials
- Dental care: Reimbursement for check-ups, hygiene appointments, fillings, crowns, and
emergency treatment, it can be used at NHS and private dentists. - Optical care: Money back for eye tests, glasses, contact lenses, and prescription
sunglasses, coverage tends to only be used once a year. - Physiotherapy: Gives you access to in-persona and virtual physio sessions that are helpful
for injuries, mobility issues, or chronic pain. - Chiropody & podiatry: Aids you with footcare treatments for example nail surgery or corn
removal. - Prescriptions: Allowing you to get money back on prescription costs, which is helpful for
those that are not exempt from NHS fees. - Complementary therapies: Including acupuncture, osteopathy, and chiropractic treatments,
these are only covered if received by a qualified practitioner.
Professional Support
- 24/7 GP access: Unlimited consultations with qualified GPs vis the SimplyPlan app, where
they can issue prescriptions, and referrals. - Mental health & counselling: Access to trained counsellors to help with any mental health
issues along with giving you someone to talk to about stress, anxiety, family issues, or
bereavement, they also have people you can talk to about legal, financial and work-related
issues. - Digital physiotherapy: Using the SimplyPlan app it will give you assessments that you can fill
out on the app along with giving you exercise plans that are tailored to any of your
concerns, whether that be for joints or general health concerns.
Health Support Extras
- Hospital stays: including an allowance for inpatient stays both with the NHS and with private
hospitals, there is however a limit on how many nights you can remain in hospital and still
be covered as there is an annual limit. - New child payments: Offers one-off payments to you whenever a child is born or adopted
while you have the policy taken out. - Health assessments: Virtual and in-person health checks are available to ensure you
monitor health factors like BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol and more. - Specialist consultation: Offers aid and cover when seeing private consultants or specialist if
you have been referred or are looking for a diagnosis.
Active Plan
The active plan doesn’t cover as much as the 1-2-3 Plan, however, does have some of the same
benefits, like hospital stays cover and new child benefits, along with 24/7 access to an online GP
and digital physiotherapy. This plan however is more focused on those with an active lifestyle or
have persistent joint or muscle issues and don’t want to pay out for the more comprehensive cover
the 1-2-3 Plan offers. The key offers with the plan are:
- Physiotherapy: Cover for both in-person and online sessions, covers a wide range of injury
and recovery needs, whether it’s a sports injury, improving mobility or posture related
concerns. - Osteopathy & chiropractic: Cover for treatments that target the spine, joints and muscles in
place to aid you with any back pain, neck stiffness, and posture issues. - Acupuncture: If you go to a registered practitioner, you can claim back on acupuncture
therapy which is great for pain relief and muscle recovery. - Sports massages: Again, if it’s with a certified provider this therapy is complementary which
can help you with circulation, recovery and reducing muscle tension.
Dental Plan
This plan is covered in the 1-2-3 plan, however, is also available as a stand-alone option for those
that wish to only get the cover. The three main areas this cover is used are for:
- Treatment: General check-ups, hygienist fees and treatments like fillings and crowns.
- Emergency & accidents: Allowing you to not stress about costly dental fees and can
prioritise your dental health first. - Mouth cancer benefits: if you are diagnosed with mouth cancer it means that all your costs
are covered.

I was looking for PMI for myself as the company I work for doesn’t provide it, and I was searching around online. Normally, I’d go through comparison sites and sort it myself, but I wanted to find out more as I know health insurance can be a bit fiddly sometimes.
I came across Jo through a Google search, and I’m honestly so glad I did. She was upfront, gave great advice, and from our first conversation in mid-April till now, she’s been amazing.
